“All of us.” That’s what Hum Sub means.

And this weekend, all of us are invited to take part in Cary Diwali 2016, an award-winning event created by the all-volunteer nonprofit Hum Sub and the Town of Cary, and held at Booth Amphitheater.

Diwali 2016 runs from 10 a.m. to dark this Saturday, Oct. 15, with free admission.

“Cary Diwali has become an integral part of the cultural arts fabric of the Triangle area,” said Hum Sub Secretary Usha Shankar. “People from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds join in the festivities.”

The theme of this year’s Cary Diwali is Yaatra, A Journey in Time, offering dance, music, cuisine, and a textile exhibition where you can learn about India’s “freedom fabric,” khadi, and the rich heritage of silk and cotton weaving. Live demos by female artists will show off textile crafts such as block printing, embroidery and painting.

Also on the schedule are cultural programs, a shopping bazaar, and public addresses by Cary Mayor Harold Weinbrecht and other dignitaries.

New this year

“We are partnering with the North Carolina Symphony for the first time this year to bring the ‘Trio of NC Symphony,’ playing during prime time in the evening just before the highlight performance,” Shankar said.

That will be popular Indian folk musician Ila Arun, who promises a high-energy, two-and-a-half hour show. The evening will end with a fireworks display at 8:30 p.m.

Also, “We are bringing the great Indian treasure of yoga to Cary Diwali,” Shankar said, with demonstrations by renowned Triangle practitioners.

Festival organizers have worked with local senior centers to ensure seniors enjoy the day, and have partnered with nonprofit Indiaspora and the U.S. Postal Service to publicize Diwali-themed stamps, released on Oct. 5.

“Cary Diwali adds yet another flavor to the already vibrant multi-ethnic community locally,” Shankar said, “and is a catalyst in making this area a melting pot of diverse cultures.”
