Looking for a little culture this weekend, close to home?
Come celebrate the color, culture and diversity of India, at Cary Diwali 2013!
This award-winning annual event, free and open to the public, recognizes the important Indian holiday of Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights.
You won’t want to miss the family fun, from a handicrafts bazaar to Indian cuisine, art and even a special headline performance by India’s pop music queen, Alisha Chinai.
This year’s event theme is Darpan: Reflections of India. Cary Diwali is hosted by Hum Sub Inc., a Cary-based, nonprofit Indian-American cultural organization with the mission of sharing the social and cultural traditions of India within the Triangle area.
So what does Hum Sub mean? It means, “All of us.”
Cary Diwali takes place on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Koka Booth Amphitheatre. Gates open at 10:30 a.m., and here’s the schedule of events:
11 a.m., Cultural programs begin; Exhibitions and bazaar open
12:15 p.m., Inauguration and address by Chief Guest Harold Weinbrecht, mayor of Cary
12:45 p.m., Cultural programs continue
4:15 p.m., Address by Chief Guest
6:30 p.m., Live in concert: Alisha Chinai, Indian pop music star
8:30 p.m., Fireworks display
Bring your lawn chairs and blankets for a fun-filled day! Admission and lawn seating are free; reserved seating is $2 from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., or $10 for the whole day. Parking is $5.
Also, the C-Tran shuttle will run between designated parking lots and the Amphitheatre; look for signs for pickup and drop-off locations.
