Find the Facts in African American Genealogy

Feb 25, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Because official documentation of African Americans prior to the Civil War was rare, doing genealogical research can be daunting. The Government and Heritage Library (GHL) of the State Library of North Carolina will share some tips and tricks to help with that process during a workshop Saturday, Feb. 25, 3 p.m. at the West Regional Library in Cary. Genealogical Research Librarian Kay Tillotson will lead the free event as part of Wake County Public Libraries’ Black History Month programming. Please call (919) 463-8500 to register.

The GHL also has created a new online tutorial that examines Cohabitation Records, an important genealogical resource for African American researchers attempting to trace their family tree back to the days of slavery. View the video here, https://youtu.be/1x5oa13Hbj4. Check out the State Library of North Carolina’s YouTube channel for more informative videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/statelibrarync.

NCpedia, the online encyclopedia about all things North Carolina, has new entries to celebrate North Carolina’s African American heritage, shared by several valued collaborators and partners including the N.C. Arts Council, N.C. State University Libraries and the State Archives of North Carolina. Discover all this information at NCpedia.
