It was something you’d see in the movies: Crowds lined up on the street waiting, the pomp of opening doors, the first whiff of popcorn.
Premiering was The Cary, a big piece of downtown Cary history brought back to life on Feb. 22 following 14 months of hard-work renovation.
Cary Magazine chief photographer Jonathan Fredin was at the grand opening, capturing the images of the day just for you.
A film fragment, discovered during the renovation.
Original theater seats from the 1940s-era building.
Even a reminder of former racial divides. All of these are part of our gallery of photos, along with the smiles on today’s faces from tiny tots to those old enough to have enjoyed movies here the first time around.
If you missed the grand opening, no problem — The Cary is here to stay, as home to independent film showings, music and live performances.
Films will be shown on Thursday nights at 7 and 9:30 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m., and every other Friday at 7 and 9:30 p.m.
The Cary's concession stand will be open during films and events, offering gourmet popcorn, snacks, soft drinks, beer and wine.
Upcoming showings include indie film W.E. on Feb. 28, Chicken Little on March 1, and the Best of the Oscars series March 6-9, including The French Connection, Chicago and more.
