Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated nationwide on Monday, Jan. 19.
Dreamfest 2015 runs from Jan. 16-19; most events are free. Here’s the schedule:
Women of Action Gathering
Page-Walker Arts & History Center, Cary
Friday, Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.
Keynote speaker Evelyn Morgan-Mahon will share her perspective on empowering women and recognizing their impact on family and community, along with her own story about her involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. Also, a fashion show will benefit Dress for Success, a program that provides clothing for women seeking employment.
A Dream of Community
The Cary Theater
Saturday, Jan. 17 from noon to 3 p.m.
Naomi King, who with her husband, A.D. King, provided quiet support for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. She will share that behind-the-scenes work toward fulfilling her brother-in-law’s dreams for community. King is the inspiration of the documentary project A.D. King: Brother to the Dreamer.
An Arts Tribute to Martin
Page-Walker Arts & History Center, Cary
Sunday, Jan. 18 at 3 p.m.
I Rise Still is a dramatic presentation of collected works by black writers. The prose and free verse of each work celebrates spirituality and collective introspection.
Dream of Democracy March 2015
Downtown Raleigh
Monday, Jan. 19 at 10 a.m.
Cary residents are invited to join other Triangle residents at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative March in downtown Raleigh. Round-trip transportation, leaving at 10 a.m., will be offered from Cary Town Hall, 316 N. Academy St. Space is limited. To RSVP, call (919) 460-4963.
Day of Service 2015
Middle Creek Community Center

Monday, January 19 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Dr. King advocated the power of community service. In this MLK Jr. Day of Service, volunteers will take part in hands-on tasks to help maintain and beautify the area around Middle Creek Community Center. Be prepared to get dirty! MLK Jr. Dreamfest: Celebration

Monday, January 19 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Members of the community are invited to join the volunteers from the MLK Jr. Dreamfest: Day of Service 2015 at a celebration of service featuring local choral groups and other performers.
