Life & Legacy: A Celebration


Art on exhibit.

Live music.

Celebrity emcee.

And a rousing keynote speaker.

All the ingredients are in place for the fifth annual Celebration of the Life and Legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., set for this Sunday, Jan. 18 at 4 p.m.

Keynote speaker for this year’s event is the Rev. Vernon Tyson, a longtime Methodist minister who was active in the Civil Rights Movement in North Carolina in the 1960s and 1970s.

His son Tim Tyson’s memoir, Blood Done Sign My Name, recounts in part the story of Rev. Tyson’s efforts to seek justice and peace following the killing of an African-American man in Oxford, N.C., in 1970.

Emcee for the celebration will be WRAL’s David Crabtree. The Die Master Singers from Garner Magnet High School, the Creech Road Elementary School chorus, and Kevin and Savannah Richmond are among performers scheduled to appear.

The event will take place at the Garner Performing Arts Center, located at 742 W. Garner Road.

Also, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., there will be an artists’ reception for the African-American Women art exhibit that’s on display in the GPAC front lobby through Feb. 28.

The exhibit showcases the art of local artists LeGrant Taylor, Eric McRay, Shawn Etheridge, FRANCO, Jermaine Powell, Delvecchio Faison and Jaylan Rhea.

Celebration of the Life and Legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is presented through a partnership of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Annual Celebration Committee, Garner Concerned Citizens United, and the Town of Garner.
