Come for the run, stay for the fun! The inaugural Carry the Water 5K, Fun Run, and One-Mile Walk are set to take off on September 23, 2017, at 10 a.m. in the capital city’s Dix Park. Following the family-friendly run will be a picnic – presented by Moe’s Southwest Grill, featuring a Moe’s Fajita Bar – and lots of fun on the grassy meadows known as Harvey Hill of Dorothea Dix Park. In addition to delicious fajitas, there will be a live DJ, a corn hole tournament, activities for kids, and a charity auction.

All proceeds from Carry the Water benefit Global Hope India and Dynamic Water’s clean water projects in India. India’s groundwater is rapidly drying up while their population is exploding. Indians in rural areas have to walk further distances to access water. With 1.3 billion citizens, India is projected to exceed China’s population within the next 10 years. Hundreds of thousands of government borewells that were drilled to 150 feet are dry. Today, drilling exceeds 450 ft to find water. Most Indians touch less than 1 liter of water per day. That’s for hydration, cleaning, and bathing. Over 900,000 Indians die per year from drinking polluted water.

Registration is just $30 until August 23, 2107. After that date, registration prices will increase. Registration can be completed online at CarryTheWaterNC.org. All paid participants will receive a free t-shirt and entry to the picnic and after-party. The run kicks off at 10 a.m. Awards and lunch will follow at 11 a.m. and last until 1 p.m.

Want to take things to the next level? Both runners and walkers will have the option to bring the water container of their choice to use during the run. Each will run or walk half of the course, fill up the water container, and then carry the full container once across the finish line – representing the physical process required to access drinking water in India today. Those who “carry the water” past the finish line will empty their container into the Carry the Water Celebration Tank.

Global Hope India’s goal is to raise $40,000 for clean water projects in India on Saturday, September 23. A single clean water project costs a total of $4,000 to provide a bore well, submersible pump, overhead tank, and six gravity taps. That same single project then provides access to clean drinking water to cover 2,000 thirsty villagers!
