Triangle Traditional Jazz Society Presents Andy Stein

The Triangle Traditional Jazz Society (TTJS) presents Andy Stein, New York-based master violinist/vocalist and two-time Grammy award winner, bringing his special brand of traditional swing and New Orleans-style jazz to the Triangle featuring a local all-star band Sunday, October 15, 3 p.m. at the Glenwood Club, 3300 Woman’s Club Drive, Raleigh.

For over 20 years Andy Stein performed as the violinist and saxophonist for NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor.

A long-time member of Vince Giordano’s Nighthawks, Stein has also performed/recorded with Wynton Marsalis, Dick Hyman, Bucky and John Pizzarelli, Nora Jones, Sir Paul McCartney, Asleep at The Wheel, Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen, Emmylou Harris, Mariah Carrey, Bob Dylan, Dr. John, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Ray Charles, B. B. King, Eric Clapton, Whitney Houston, Tony Bennett, Carol King, James Taylor, Michael Jackson, and many others.

His pops and “serious” (classical) arrangements and compositions have been performed by major orchestras worldwide (also minor ones, both augmented and diminished).

Performing with Andy Stein October 15 is an all-star traditional jazz band featuring George Knott, bassist of the Atomic Rhythm All Stars, Russ Wilson, Asheville-based drummer, Marc Brookshire, guitarist for the Russ Wilson Orchestra and Gregg Gelb, clarinet; Dave Wright, trombone; Greg Cagle, cornet; and Court Stewart, piano from the Second Line Stompers.

Area Musicians: A free jam session with Andy Stein and the group will begin immediately following for area musicians. Sign up at the ticket table and names will be called to the stage to jam with the artists.

TTJS offers public performances and educational opportunities for national and local musicians and bands to come together to play, learn, and follow traditional jazz, otherwise known as Dixieland, the music that came out of the cotton fields and bayous to cities, notably New Orleans, and later to St. Louis, Chicago, and New York in the early decades of the last century.
