Shovels and Rope is the remarkable duo of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst, partners in life as well as in music, who’ve built a national following with their signature blend of acoustic guitars, drums, and vocals. The Charleston, S.C., couple broke through with their 2012 album O’ Be Joyful, which earned them “Best Emerging Artist” at the Americana Music Awards and a slot on the Late Show with David Letterman. PopMatterscalls the group “the most exciting act in Americana in recent years.” Their fifth album, Little Seeds (New West Records, 2016), is “the strongest piece of record-making Shovels and Rope has delivered to date,” says All Music Guide.
Alt-country pioneer Son Volt is the creation of singer-songwriter-guitarist Jay Farrar, who formed the band 25 years ago after the breakup of Uncle Tupelo, the band he cofounded with Jeff Tweedy of Wilco fame. Son Volt’s 1995 album Trace is a masterpiece and was expanded and remastered by Rhino Records for a 20th-anniversary reissue. The band recently released a fine album of classic blues called Notes of Blue.
