From Pirates to Peanuts: 350 Years of Chowan County

Celebrate From Pirates to Peanuts: 350 Years of Chowan County on Edenton’s Historic 1767 Chowan County Courthouse Green, Oct. 6, 2018 from 11-6pm.

Kick off the day with the 43rd annual Peanut Festival Parade, then interact with 1700s and 1800s military and civilian reenactors and witness demonstrations from the Chowanoke, Tuscarora, Roanoke-Hatteras/Mattamaskeet, and Meherrin Tribes. The USAF Heritage of America Rhythm in Blue Band will close out the afternoon with a short concert.

Reenactors from Roanoke Island Festival Park will demonstrate 16th century Roanoke Voyages from 1584-1590, England’s first attempt at settlement in the New World, with a Harquebus demonstration and an interactive pike and arms drill, and 16th century children’s games.

Leviathan Nautical Living History, a 1780s American Privateers (Pirates!) reenactment group will demonstrate period cooking, weapons firing, a ropework display, and surgical/apothecary displays. They will also be firing from a 20 foot Hawker’s Island skiff!

The Tarheel Civilians are a Civil War Era civilian reenactment group that demonstrates spinning, weaving, knitting, sewing, quilting, and period games.

There will also be an 18th century physician demonstrating medical history from the 1760s with a display of medicines and surgical instruments used during the time period (Chris Grimes). As well as a peruke maker, who demonstrates how to make 18th century wigs!

The 9th New Jersey, the Cape Fear Living History Society’s group of Civil War Reenactors, will have Civil War military displays and interpret the life of the common Civil War soldier. They will be demonstrating different infantry drills. There will also be a Civil War era medical tent.

The itinerary below gives an overview of what will take place with a timeline

11:00am: Peanut Parade down Broad Street and Peanut Festival at John A Holmes High School

12:00-3:30: Witness black powder firing demonstrations and interact with historical reenactors on the 1767 Chowan County Courthouse green, demonstrations and displays by reenactors and local Native American Tribes, play with colonial-era games and activities

3:30: United States Air Force Heritage of America Rhythm in Blue Band concert

6:00: Peanut Festival continues at John A. Holmes High School and battle of the bands begins at 7:00 pm
