variesIn partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, North Carolina African American Heritage Commission, North Carolina Arts Council, and Come Hear North Carolina (#ComeHearNC), the North Carolina Museum of Art is hosting a series of events that recognize the talent, legacy, and spirit of a beloved North Carolina musician.
Dance and Documentary – Friday, August 16 | 7 PM
Duke professor and acclaimed dancer-choreographer Thomas DeFrantz and his group Slippage deliver a moving tribute to Nina Simone through spoken word, dance, and interactive technology. The 45-minute performance is followed by intermission and the screening of the documentary What Happened, Miss Simone? (2015) 101 min., not rated.
Music Master Class: Nina Simone Redux, Sing a Song of Nina – Saturday, August 17 | 10:30 AM
Lenora Helm Hammonds, assistant professor in the North Carolina Central University Jazz Studies Program, leads a master classes for music enthusiasts, educators, teaching artists, and students. Learn about Nina Simone’s well-known and lesser-heralded works through an interactive workshop discussing the singer’s work and contributions as a composer. Members of the NCCU Vocal Jazz Ensemble will join the workshop.
Music Master Class: Nina Simone, The Life of an Icon – Saturday, August 17 | 2 PM
enora Helm Hammonds, assistant professor in the North Carolina Central University Jazz Studies Program, leads a master classes for music enthusiasts, educators, teaching artists, and students. Explore the music and life of Nina Simone through songs, discussion, audience participation, and musical demonstrations, and leave with a knowledge of new discoveries of her work and influence as a trailblazing woman in music.
Celebrating Nina Simone featuring Lisa Simone in Concert – Saturday, August 17 | 8 PM
Lisa Simone, an award-winning actress and Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist, will be accompanied by The Tribe Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Lenora Helm Hammonds. Featuring top jazz musicians with international followings, The Tribe Jazz Orchestra blends the traditional jazz orchestra with the modern chamber ensemble to create a swinging, soulful sound to complement the classic repertoire of Nina Simone. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the rehabilitation and preservation of the Nina Simone Childhood Home in Tryon, N.C.
A Conversation with Lisa Simone – Sunday, August 18 | 3 PM
Lisa Simone, daughter of Nina Simone, leads a conversation about her mother’s legacy, her own life as a performing artist, and the critical responsibility of preserving African American culture.
