Come one, come all to the 2020 Outhouse Races on Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Sapphire Valley Resort in Sapphire, N.C. This quirky contest has three simple rules: you must register in advance, the outhouse must be five feet tall, secured to a pair of skis, and be equipped with a toilet seat and paper.
An unofficial rule, rather an encouragement, is to name your outhouse something as silly as the race itself. Previous names include “Party Pooper,” “The Royal Flush” and “Redneck Wishing Well.”
The goal of the race is to make it down a snowy hill in your outhouse without it falling over – all in front of several hundred people.
The afternoon starts with a parade to view all the outhouses, followed by racing at 3 p.m. Details are available at https://www.discoverjacksonnc.com/calendar-event/outhouse-races/. All proceeds of the event benefit local charities.
Not sure it’s worth seeing for yourself? The races have been named a Top 20 event in the Southeast for February by Southeast Tourism Society.
It’s truly a sight to see.
