If you’re staying in this New Year’s Eve, consider gussying up your champagne toast with one of these sparkling cocktail recipes. A few extra ingredients will turn simple champagne into the evening’s signature drink and will elevate your get together with friends to a sophisticated soiree.
Classic Champagne Cocktail
3 drops bitters
1 sugar cube
1 ounce cognac (optional)
4 ounces champagne, chilled
Drop bitters onto sugar cube; let soak in. Place sugar cube in a champagne flute. Add cognac, and top with champagne.
French 75
½ ounce fresh lemon juice
½ ounce simple syrup
1 ounce gin or cognac
3 ounces champagne
Add the lemon juice, simple syrup and the gin or cognac to a cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake well and strain into a champagne flute. Top with the champagne and garnish with a lemon twist.
Black Velvet
Guinness beer
Champagne
Fill a highball glass halfway with Guinness beer. Fill the glass up with champagne or sparkling wine.
Mimosa
2 ounces orange juice
Champagne, chilled
Add the orange juice to a champagne flute. Fill with sparkling wine.
Very Sexy Martini
3 to 4 raspberries
5 to 7 mint leaves
1 ounce fresh lime juice
1 ounce simple syrup
1.5 ounes citrus vodka (such as lemon or orange)
1.5 ounces champagne
Muddle the raspberries, mint leaves, lime juice and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add the citrus vodka and fill with ice. Shake vigorously and double-strain into a chilled martini glass. Top with champagne. Garnish with a mint sprig and a raspberry.
