The annual Wake County Teen Art Exhibit, presented by the Fine Arts League of Cary, is showcasing pieces by talented high school art students online due to safety concerns over the coronavirus.
Brenda Brokke, FALC chairperson, put photographs of the art onto a website to display winning art from public and private high schools. The pieces were judged in three categories: the Meredith College Award, the FALC Award, and the Jerry’s Award.
“I love the variety of the pieces, they were phenomenal,” she said.
High school art teachers could submit six pieces each to the FALC to be considered for the categories.
In addition to providing the FALC award-winners with a check, the arts group matches the award amount given to the students with a donation to their school’s art department.
The Jerry’s Awards are sponsored by Jerry’s Artarama in Raleigh. Winners in this category are provided with gift cards to the art supply store.
Due to the coronavirus, the exhibit could not be hosted at its usual location at Meredith College’s art gallery. However, the college showed its support through the Meredith College Scholarship prizes, which award four student scholarships of $1,000 to study at Meredith.
Brokke says young artists should continue to find creativity while at home.
“It is the perfect time, you don’t have any distractions, take advantage of that and keep working,” Brokke said.
