There are many selfless workers among us. Their call of duty doesn’t involve money, glory or fame. Instead, they work for smiles, service and stewardship. Their hearts are heavy with the reality that people in our community are in need, suffering or could use a helping hand.

In the spirit of giving, we’re presenting four volunteers this issue who give of their time, talents and tenacity. Perhaps their stories will motivate you to find ways to get plugged into your community. You’ll find that the payback is worth more than money, glory or fame.

Now is a trying time. The atmosphere of uncertainty looming over the country has led most people to focus on safeguarding their No. 1 priorities — their jobs, their families, their security. That’s why it’s even more remarkable to find people who are still showing boundless selflessness and helping others before helping themselves. They devote innumerable hours to providing information, transportation and comfort to people and animals in need. They are givers, doers and caretakers. They are the Volunteers of Western Wake.
