Local Teen Brings Comfort with Higgy Bears

When it comes to doing good in the world, age truly is just a number — just ask Teagan Sevio, a 14-year-old scoliosis patient from Apex.

“I was diagnosed with scoliosis (a curvature of the spine) in June 2019 and had several doctor’s appointments leading up to a seven-hour surgery on 9/11/19. My curves went from 80 and 50 degrees to zero degrees with the help of two titanium rods, 27 screws, and my amazing surgeon, Dr. Robert Lark,” said Sevio.

Despite having an amazing support group of family and friends, Sevio often felt alone in her condition, finding it difficult to relate to other kids who had never shared her experience. One year later, Sevio stumbled across a small business called Higgy Bears that made stuffed animals with rods, curves, and braces to emulate scoliosis patients. Even better, the company was founded by another young scoliosis patient in Michigan who understood just how isolating the journey could be.

“I bought one and it brought me so much comfort, which gave me the idea to do a fundraiser and help my hospital, surgeon, and Higgy Bears,” said Sevio.

Never one to back down from a challenge, Sevio embarked on a fundraising campaign in June, which is National Scoliosis Awareness Month. With the help of GoFundMe, she raised $2,205 and was able to purchase 97 Higgy Bears (at a discounted fundraiser rate) for local scoliosis patients. Every single bear will be sent to Duke Children’s Hospital and Dr. Robert Lark, who will pass them out to children who have just had scoliosis surgery.

“My goal through all of this is that scoliosis patients have comfort and less fear through their scoliosis journey,” said Sevio.
