the WakeMed Cary Hospital Women’s Pavilion & Birthplace (then known as the Western Wake Medical Center Women’s Pavilion & Birthplace) officially opened for business. Since then the center, and the babies delivered there, continue to grow.
In 1998, the first full year of operation, the WakeMed Cary Hospital Women’s Pavilion & Birthplace delivered 1,089 babies. In 2010, that number more than doubled.
WakeMed Cary Hospital Women’s Pavilion & Birthplace features:
- 10 labor, delivery and recovery rooms
- 26 postpartum and women’s care rooms
- 2 operating rooms for cesarean deliveries
- An 8-bed Level III Neonatal Special Care Nursery
- 5 triage rooms

Birthing beds at WakeMed are each named for a Disney character. From Minnie to Ariel, the names strive to keep the mood in the labor rooms lighthearted.
Average number of babies born every day at WakeMed Cary, totaling more than 2,500 for all of 2010. The scales were tipped slightly in favor of boys, with 1,265 boys and 1,243 girls.
Sets of twins born at WakeMed Cary Hospital Women’s Pavilion & Birthplace last year. There was also one set of triplets.
First-time moms delivered at WakeMed Cary Hospital Women’s Pavilion & Birthplace in 2010, and more than 1,450 veteran moms welcomed new family members as well.
Of the babies born at WakeMed Cary Hospital last year, the most popular boys’ names were:
- Mason (ranks 12 nationally)
- Henry (ranks 67 nationally)
- Tyler (ranks 34 nationally)
- Ethan (ranks 2 nationally )
The most popular girls’ names were:
- Ella (ranks 13 nationally)
- Emma (ranks 3 nationally)
- Emily (ranks 6 nationally)
