That’s a Wrap

Local students are invited to design a wrap for a Mercedes-Benz.

Luxury car. Cash prizes. What more do you need to know?

Cary Visual Art, in conjunction with Mercedes-Benz of Cary, is inviting high school students to submit innovative, beautiful designs for a wrap that will cover a Mercedes-Benz 2017 E300.

“Mercedes-Benz of Cary approached CVA about how to increase their support of the arts in Cary, which is how this car wrap competition came about,” said Catherine Howard, executive director of Cary Visual Art. “Mercedes-Benz of Cary has been a critical supporter of Cary Visual Art for several years as one of the primary sponsors of the CVA Young Cary Artists Scholarship Program, which awards arts scholarships to Cary high school seniors.

“By providing cash prizes for this competition, Mercedes-Benz of Cary is proving to students that the arts are a career path, not just a hobby. And by considering how to design a creative product that is also engaging for a client, students are getting an introduction to the real-world problem solving that happens when working with clients.”

The winning student, or student team, will receive a $500 cash prize and will have their design created as a wrap that will be unveiled at the 20th anniversary CVA Art Ball on Feb. 11, 2017. The design of the car wrap should represent the “Future of Art and Technology,” and how they influence one another. This theme can be taken as loosely and creatively as the students desire.

“The ‘Future of Art and Technology is one of the critical components of how Mercedes-Benz designs and markets its vehicles,” Howard said. “The art world is also trending toward a melding of art and technology. Encouraging our students to consider the intersection of art and technology primes their brains to think across disciplines and to consider how technology and art have the same creative and critical thinking foundations.”

When designing the wrap, students should consider how the design will transition from one side of the car to the next. The car is sculptural, so they can use the shape of the car to enhance their designs.

Any high school student living in or attending school in Cary is eligible to submit a design. Prizes include first place, $500 cash; second place, $100 cash; and third place, $50 gift card.

All entries must be submitted as by Monday, Dec. 12 to cva@caryvisualart.org, along with an essay explaining the concept of the design.
