About the show:
In the overwhelming quiet of the woods, six runaways from city life embark on a silent retreat. As these strangers confront internal demons both profound and absurd, their vows of silence collide with the achingly human need to connect. Filled with awkward and insightful humor, SMALL MOUTH SOUNDS is the unique and compassionate play that asks how we address life’s biggest questions when words fail us and how we mend our broken hearts. This 2016 Critics’ Pick (The New York Times, New York Magazine, Time Out New York) was written by Drama Desk Award winner BESS WOHL (Grand Horizons, Pretty Filthy). The New York Times says, “It leaves you moved, refreshed and even enlightened.” The Huffington Post calls it “a play unlike any other.” And Variety calls it “flawless.”
Ms. Wohl’s play is also a model of ingenuity. During its 100-minute running time and with one exception — the (unseen) guru running this spiritual retreat — the characters hardly ever speak. Both the humor and the pathos spring mostly from wordless interaction, which is testimony to Ms. Wohl’s intrepid writing and the precise work of the production’s ensemble. This group of veteran Triangle theatremakers, after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is not to be missed.
About Honest Pint:
Honest Pint Theatre Company is a professional theatre company established in 2013 and located in Raleigh, NC. Their inaugural offering was a critically acclaimed production of A STEADY RAIN by Keith Huff. Honest Pint’s 2015 production of Sharr White’s ANNAPURNA won awards for Set Design, Acting, and Best Drama at the Inaugural Triangle Theatre awards. Honest Pint produced the critically acclaimed production of William Shakespeare’s HAMLET (UNCUT) and the regional premiere of THE NIGHT ALIVE by Conor McPherson, which was hailed by critics as the season’s most satisfying production and one of the top five productions of 2017 in the Triangle. Audiences roared for their production of KING LEAR in 2018 and critics lauded their production of THE MYSTERY OF LOVE & SEX by Bathsheba Doran that year, as well. 2019’s THE HERD by Rory Kinnear was cited as one of the top shows produced that year and was followed by Matthew Lopez’s THE LEGEND OF GEORGIA MCBRIDE, which played to sold-out audiences and devotees. It truly was a theatrical force that audiences and critics still harken back to as their top theatre-going experience of the year. Honest Pint’s last show pre-pandemic was their 2019 production of David’s Ives’ THE METROMANIACS, which had audiences in stitches and was the hilarious release we all needed in an otherwise dark year.
