Joey O Bocce Classic for Cystic Fibrosis Research
Apr 29, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
The Joey O Bocce Classic tournament promises outdoor fun and entertainment for all ages. Individuals and teams are invited to register and participate in this community-wide event to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) research. In the past 10 years, the Joey O Bocce Classic has raised more than a quarter million dollars to fund medical research.
Participants will be treated to lunch by Smithfield Chicken and BBQ and have a chance to bid on silent auction items that include signed basketballs from UNC and Duke, and a signed football from NC State. Guests can also bid on a “staycation” at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill, N.C., and golf for four at the Wild Dunes Resort on Isle of Palms, S.C.
Why: There are about 30,000 CF patients in the U.S. alone, alongside 10 million “symptomless” carriers. The Joey O Bocce Classic was founded in 2008 by Joe O’Connell, his family and friends as a way to raise awareness and funds for CF research. Those who knew Joey remember his positive spirit, infectious laugh and zest for life. In November 2009, Joey lost his fight with CF but his legacy lives on through family, friends and his community.
Who: Currently, more than 30 teams have signed up to participate in this year’s tournament by registering online.
WRAL Anchor Debra Morgan will be on site to welcome the community to the event, along with additional local celebrities including Mike Maniscalco from 99.9FM WRAL Sports Fan radio and NC State mascot, Ms. Wuf!
When: 9 a.m. on Sunday, April 30
Where: Cardinal Gibbons High School, 1401 Edwards Mill Road, Raleigh
