The Capitol Steps present “The Lyin’ Kings”
Sep 21, 2019 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm
$35 – $65The musical satire troupe The Capitol Steps is returning to the Triangle with its new production The Lyin’ Kings for a single-night performance on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019, 8 p.m. at the Carolina Theatre, 309 W. Morgan St., in Durham.
Political satire is everywhere today, but The Capitol Steps has entertained audiences in the Triangle and beyond with political song parodies and skits for more than 30 years.
The Lyin’ King includes skits and lyrics about the current Democratic primary candidates and the newest late-night thoughts from President Donald Trump set to well-known pop tunes. Professional actors and singers draw inspiration from today’s news headlines and Twitter feeds and share their unique mix of musical and political comedy with audiences.
Some examples of the types of performances attendees will see during the show include President Trump singing a rock song, Bernie Sanders singing a show tune and Vladimir Putin dancing shirtless.
Tickets are available now at www.carolinatheatre.org (Search Lyin’ Kings) and range in price from $37-$67.
Producer and actor Mike Thornton, a Capitol Steps performer since 1997, has portrayed Presidents from Reagan to Trump, and currently plays the latter in The Lyin’ Kings show.
“With the next Presidential election fast approaching, it’s the ideal time to see The Lyin’ Kings,” says Thornton. “The new show makes light of political figures and situations from all party affiliations and will leave audiences roaring with laughter—pun intended.”
Elaina Newport, a founding member of The Capitol Steps says that troupes have put the “mock” in democracy for nine presidential elections.
“As fast as a politician can send a tweet or make a statement, our writers and performers can create a new song or joke,” says Newport. “One thing that hasn’t changed since we started performing for live audiences in 1981 is that no matter who is making the news, we all need a laugh.”
