Dorcas Ministries of Cary will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2018 with the theme of Stitching Together a Community: 50 Years of Service.
Dorcas is named for a woman from the Bible who made garments for the poor and was noted for her charitable work. Today, Dorcas Ministries provides crisis relief to Western Wake residents who seek stability and sufficiency, by offering food and financial aid, scholarships, training programs, referrals and an affordable thrift shop.
As a part of its anniversary celebration, Dorcas is looking for 50 volunteer quilters, either individuals or quilting bees, to create a quilt inspired by the nonprofit’s years of service to the Cary community.
Quilters are asked to donate their quilts to Dorcas. The quilts will be showcased in local businesses throughout 2018, and then auctioned off at a commemorative event in November 2018, with funds raised going directly to support Dorcas’ outreach services.
Dorcas Ministries will provide sketches, pictures and themes to assist in the creation of quilts, and will assist with the cost of quilting supplies if a volunteer quilter is unable to afford them.
Cary Quilting Company, located at 935 N. Harrison Ave., is partnering on the project by offering a discount on supplies used to make the Dorcas quilts.
Quilters will be acknowledged for their gifts of time and talent at the commemorative event.
