Note in the Pocket, a nonprofit that clothes thousands of local children, began with one act of kindness more than a decade ago.
Teacher Margaret Reiland noticed some of her students didn’t have winter coats, so she brought in coats and heavy jackets for the students to take home. But the next day, the garments were returned. The students’ families could not believe anyone would give their child a coat. From then on, a note was then placed in the pocket of each coat explaining that it was a gift.
Today, Note in the Pocket works to clothe children with dignity and love in collaboration with schools, transitional housing facilities and organizations such as the Salvation Army. Last year, Note in the Pocket reached more than 4,000 individuals, mostly children, throughout Wake County. Volunteers have delivered 89,564 donated items of clothing and shoes, the total of which was valued at nearly $650,000.
To help with the group’s efforts, runners of all abilities and ages are invited to a fundraiser, the 6th Annual Socks and Undie 5K Rundie. On Saturday, April 27, the nonprofit will host a 5K and Kids Fun Run starting at 8:30 a.m. at Dorothea Dix Park in Raleigh.
The course, certified by the US Track & Field Association, goes through Dorothea Dix Park filled with history and a view of the downtown Raleigh skyline.
Registration closes on Wednesday April 24, and 5K entry fees start at $30 and includes a short-sleeve performance T-shirt. Race options are comprised of Corporate Teams and Group “Rundie Teams” along with the Dog Trot Run and Kids Fun Run ½ K.
