Take a swing at helping area veterans and their families!
Players and sponsors are needed for the Holly Springs Rotary Club’s 13th Annual Charity Golf Classic, to be held at Devil’s Ridge Golf Club on Monday, April 9. For the fourth year, the annual fundraiser will benefit the U.S. Veterans Corps and OPERATION: Coming Home.
“They’re helping our local veterans,” said Jim Wyland, golf committee chair with the Holly Springs Rotary Club. “OPERATION: Coming Home coordinates efforts of local builders and suppliers to build a home for a local vet that is returning from service who has been injured. They build a home that is custom-built to their needs — whether they need wheelchair ramps or anything else.”
This year’s fundraising goal is $12,500, he says, and proceeds will go to help defray startup costs of U.S. Veteran Corps’ new food and toy distribution center. Between 120 and 145 golfers are expected to participate in the event.
Golfers can register as late as April 4 for the event, the largest fundraiser organized by the Holly Springs Rotary Club. The registration includes a round of golf, contests for longest drive and closest to the pin, a box lunch, and a buffet dinner.
The 2017 golf classic raised $10,000, which went toward completing a veteran’s home in Fuquay-Varina. OPERATION: Coming Home is a partnership between the US Veterans Corps and the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County. Wounded vets are selected to receive a custom-built home and simply handed the keys. In 2018, the group will build its 19th home in Wake County.
“It’s nice to know that a lot of these veterans are local, they’re right in our own community. Whether it’s Garner, Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs or Apex, they’re right here,” said Wyland. “That means all the more.”
