If you’ve ever spent time in Downtown Cary, you might have noticed Good Day Cary — a cheerful little blue gift shop located directly beside Bull City Ciderworks that literally exudes charm. Sat amongst a lively eating and drinking scene, this house turned gift shop delivers what owner Krista Wicklund noticed was lacking in the town upon relocating here from Long Island, NY: a place to browse and shop for local and unique items.

“As our youngest was finishing up high school, we decided to switch things up and move to North Carolina in 2019,” said Wicklund. “We didn’t know anyone and did not move for a job, just a new chapter.”

Little did Wicklund know that this new chapter would include another stint as a small-business owner — a role she thought she had left behind in New York. Despite all the hardships that come with owning a business, Wicklund couldn’t ignore the pull of setting up shop and creating a space that specialized in Cary hometown items and items sourced from local makers and small businesses.

“I saw an opportunity and ran with it. I am creating the place where I would want to shop,” writes Wicklund on her website.

Looking for a baby shower gift? Good Day Cary offers unique (and local) options.

Since its opening in July 2022, Good Day Cary has been turning the heads of locals and visitors alike — and we just had to know more!

When did Good Day Cary open, and what were you up to prior to its opening?

We moved out of our short-term rental and into our new home in February 2020, and then Covid hit. I remember saying, out loud, ‘Thank God I do not have a business to worry about,’ as I saw the hardships that small businesses had to endure. I was enjoying meeting my neighbors (outdoors) and exploring the area as best we could during lockdown. I had worked two part-time jobs that I enjoyed, but something was missing and I really just felt unfulfilled.

What was the inspiration behind opening your business?

I saw the need for a gift shop in Downtown Cary. I loved walking around, getting something to eat, grabbing a beer, or visiting the library, but where were the cute shops? Downtown Cary is attracting more and more visitors — and residents — who are looking to spend time in the downtown area, and we’re really lacking places to shop. In the summer of 2021, I felt the time was right. My husband encouraged me to take the chance, and I started looking for a space.

What does Good Day Cary offer?

I sell happiness. I wanted to create a fun space that is welcoming and not stuffy, where people can pick up a local Cary or North Carolina souvenir, a housewarming gift, birthday card, gift for a friend, or a piece of jewelry. We have all seen the resurgence of supporting local and small makers. And while online shopping is still popular, sometimes you just need to see, touch, and smell to find the right gift. That being said, I try to find items that are unique and different and not found on Amazon. We’ll have a few well-known brands, but I will always try to source from small and local businesses when I can.

I am proud to carry Spiritiles by Houston Llew, which are handcrafted copper art pieces made in Charleston, local candles and soaps, local coasters, barware and coffee, gift books, cards, jewelry, hand bags, baby and pet items, and puzzles and art pieces by local artists that will rotate seasonally. I wanted to have an eclectic mix of items so you can find something for whatever occasion you are shopping for at different price points.

Handbag, anyone? Good Day Cary has something for every occasion.

What do you love about owning a business in Cary?

I love the people. Downtown Cary has a very laid-back vibe. Whether it is a local resident who is walking to the Farmers Market on Saturday, or someone who is staying at the Mayton for business, there is always a fun mix of people (and dogs) coming and going. I meet a lot of interesting people, and I enjoy telling them about all the great things the Triangle has to offer.

What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of owning your own business?

Let’s face it, cash flow is the most challenging aspect of most businesses. I try to strike a balance between wants and needs. Planning and budgeting is a necessary evil. My other challenge is social media. I try my best to “post and like,” but I opened a physical location for a reason — I want to interact face to face. It takes me 20 minutes to remember all the hashtags I should use.

The most rewarding part of my day is when people say things like, “I’m so glad you’re here” or, “We really needed a gift shop.” I really appreciate the positive feedback, and just want people to have a great experience when they shop. Having repeat customers and getting to know people a bit really makes it all worth it!

What are some of your favorite offerings at the store?

The Spiritiles are my favorite. Each tile is handmade and tells a story. They are brightly colored and resonate with so many people on different levels. Many people have never seen them before, and it is a great conversation starter. They are a truly unique gift.

What else should we know?

We make gift bags for any occasion and price point, and delivery is available. We ship as well. You have a request, we will do our best to make it happen!
